This week’s featured song story comes to us from Building 429. We’re excited to share with you the story behind their song “Different.”
“Building 429 has a brand new single called ‘Different’ and it’s a song I’m really excited about. What’s special about it and different about it is that it was actually started by my daughter. I walked upstairs late one night and heard my daughter playing something new on the piano and was almost stopped in my tracks. ‘Different. I hear them say I’m different.’ Simple lyrics that just wrecked me. Here my fourteen-year-old was singing the words that matched a thousand thoughts in my forty-year-old head. We immediately started working on it and as we were writing we began talking about how God loves different…He loves variety, how the world is amazing because of how different every part of it is, and that maybe, just maybe the differences between us are actually a gift. Maybe we shouldn’t hide who we really are. Maybe our scars are a story that testify that nothing is wasted so we don’t have to hide. ” – Jason Roy (Building 429)

“Different” Lyrics
Different
God, why’d You make me different
I can never fit in
Can’t You see it’s hard to be so
Different (different, different)
Oh, the voices I keep hearing
Say I don’t belong
Please, tell me they’re wrong
Help me to live
Without hiding my scars
Knowing I’ve always been loved
Help to me live
With a wide open heart
‘Cause You say I’m more than enough
If I stand my ground and don’t back down
I’ll be proud of who I’ve become
Daring to fail
Willing to fall
Never to run, whoa
Never to run, whoa
Different (different)
The way You work is different (different)
Though I am so imperfect (though I am so imperfect)
Why can’t I see that I am just
Unfinished (unfinished)
Hard to see it when You’re in it (in it)
Lord, I know, yes, I know, You are in it
Help me to live
Without hiding my scars
Knowing I’ve always been loved
Help to me live
With a wide open heart
‘Cause You say I’m more than enough
If I stand my ground and don’t back down
I’ll be proud of who I’ve become
Daring to fail
Willing to fall
Never to run, whoa
Never to run, whoa
You use the foolish to silence the wise
You dragged a cross to bring us to life
Your scars are a story and they testify
That nothing is wasted
I don’t have to hide
I’m gonna live
Without hiding my scars
Knowing I’ve always been loved
I’m gonna live
With a wide open heart
‘Cause You say I’m more than enough
If I stand my ground and don’t back down
I’ll be proud of who I’ve become
Daring to fail
Willing to fall
Never to run, whoa
Never to run, whoa
Never to run, whoa
Never to run, whoa
Willing to fail
Willing to fall
Never to run
