Dan Dean of Phillips, Craig & Dean Announces He Is Recovering From Battle with Prostate Cancer

Nashville, Tenn. (October 22, 2012) – Dan Dean of the beloved, Dove Award-winning trio Phillips, Craig & Dean, recently announced that he has been battling prostate cancer. The worship leader and senior pastor of The Heartland Church in Carrollton, Tex., was diagnosed early this spring, just prior to the the release of Phillips, Craig & Dean’s most recent album, Breathe In. Dean recently sat down for an intimate video interview in which he shares the news of his diagnosis, the stuggles his illness has created and, ultimately, the faith-strengthening, emotional experience he’s had. Since his initial diagnosis, he has made great progress in his journey on the long road toward recovery and remission.

“You find out some devastating news, you get a phone call, you’re standing in a corridor at the hospital, and in those moments, you have a choice to make,” Dean reflects on learning he had cancer. “You can fall into doubt, and questions and fears. The temptation is there for all of us to do that. In the moments when I can’t see God’s hand, or see His face working in my life, I make a choice to believe that He’s there, that He’s involved in the daily affairs of my life, that He’s in control, that He knows what I’m walking through.”

In July, Dean, with his family, chose to have surgery to attempt to remove the cancer from his lymph nodes. Post-surgery, the doctors were confident that his lymph nodes were clear and that he is on his way to experiencing a normal life. Dean plans on making routine checkups with his doctors over the next several months and considers himself “80% recovered and moving along rather well.”

Dean is not the first in his family to battle this disease. Prior to his cancer journey, Dean lost his father-in-law to liver cancer and his brother to mesothelioma. A song originally inspired by his brother’s illness, “I Choose to Believe” (from Phillips, Craig & Dean’s most recent album, Breathe In), now has a special meaning all it’s own to Dean.

“Until you’ve experienced somebody looking at you in the face and saying you have cancer, you don’t know what that’s like until you’ve been there,” Dean says. “You don’t know the negative thought process that tries to attack you and come at you, and then how you have to build your faith. That’s when you can say, as the chorus of this song declares, ‘I choose to believe.’”

For more information on Dean’s cancer battle and to hear his story in his own words, please visit http://youtu.be/MEUilCx8lUU to watch an intimate video interview with the singer, songwriter and pastor.

In addition to his musical career with Phillips, Craig, & Dean, Dan Dean serves as the Senior Pastor at Heartland Church in Carrolton, Tex., and is a husband to Becky and father to Dusty (29), Devin (26), and Danielle (23).

Decorated Trio Phillips, Craig & Dean’s Breathe In Bows With Strong and Exciting Debut Week

On the heels of a street week filled with overwhelmingly positive reviews, several sold-out album release concerts and their single “When The Stars Burn Down” poised to crown radio charts, it’s good to be Phillips, Craig & Dean! Their latest recording Breathe In bowed at retail last Tuesday, March 13. This, their 12th studio album, entered the Billboard Christian Soundscan charts at No. 4, and in digital sales, the project peaked at No. 4 on the iTunes® Christian Albums chart. “When The Stars Burn Down” continues to burn up the charts at radio, seizing the No. 2 spot on the Billboard Christian Soft AC/INSPO radio chart, the No. 7 position on the Billboard Christian Audience Chart and No. 12 on the AC chart. Phillips, Craig & Dean also embarked on a street-week promo tour with hugely popular shows in Dallas, Minneapolis, St. Louis and Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Breathe In album release promotional concerts garnered sell-out crowds on Mon., March 12 at Gateway Church in Dallas, Tues., March 13 in Minneapolis at Mall of America, Wed., March 14 in Winston-Salem, and Thurs., March 15 in St. Louis at Calvary Church. The shows were massively successful in all markets, with the St. Louis show having 1800 tickets snatched in just a few minutes for the early show. Because of demand, an additional show was added for the mid-afternoon for an additional 1000 listeners. Over 3500 attended the street-week kickoff show in Dallas, and 4000 fans crowded into the rotunda at Minneapolis’ Mall of America to see the band perform.
Produced by Bernie Herms and Nathan Nockels, the 10-track album features songs co-written by each band member including “Tell Your Heart To Beat Again,” “All Is Well” and “I Choose To Believe.” Breathe In speaks life into a world so full of frustration and struggle. Twenty one years into their storied career, Phillips Craig & Dean offer another ground-breaking collection of songs poised to minister to the hurting, lead believers in powerful praise, and point the broken to Christ.
Reviews of Breathe In are matching the eager reception at radio and among fans. Below is just a sample of what the critics are saying…
“With two decades under their belts and well over 20 chart-topping singles, Phillips, Craig & Dean doesn“t show signs of slowing down anytime soon. The trio’s twelfth studio disc follows in the footsteps of its career revival cut “Revelation Song,” promising plenty of string-soaked worship and inspiring contemporary pop reflections.”
Gospel Music Channel
“On Breathe In, Randy Phillips, Shawn Craig, and Dan Dean illustrate why they’ve enjoyed longevity: They consistently produce quality music and well-written songs while remaining musically relevant. Breathe In is a glowing showcase for time-tested musical trio Phillips, Craig & Dean. The three solidly demonstrate musical relevance, songwriting skills, and vocals that sound better than ever. The group is clearly still having fun after all these years!” – New Release Tuesday
“…with vertical songwriting as well as modern arrangements…Songs like the powerful “Great, Great God” carry a congregational chorus, while the modern hymn “All Is Well” is suited for churches or personal worship alike. As their rendition of 2010 Song of the Year “Revelation Song” indicated, PC&D have only gotten stronger with time.” – CCM
“The suitably rousing opener, “Great and Glorious,” the inspirational singalong of lead single “When the Stars Burn Down,” and the hymnal-like rock of “Great I Am” burst out of the block with an emphatic production from Bernie Herms (Casting Crowns) and regular collaborator Nathan Nockels…” – All Music Guide
“Their latest album aims to bridge the two sides of their musical worlds, reining in the group’s more fist-pumping ways while adding some spice to their quieter ballads.”
– Christianity Today

When I first heard “When the Stars Burn Down” it immediately had that same impact as “Revelation Song,” with that big worship moment where you’re transported out of this mortal world into the next.Randy Phillips

I love this idea of the unveiling of Jesus Christ in glory and the melting down of the universe. And how when all that is said and done Jesus Christ is still Lord. – Shawn Craig

It is another one of those songs that, similar to “Revelation Song,” puts things into perspective of what life is really all about. – Dan Dean

And Now For Some Encouraging Words From Pastor Shawn Craig about New Year commitments…

The Book that Keeps on Giving

I don’t buy many movies. Why? Because once you’ve seen it, you know how the story goes and it takes the punch out it.

Not so with the Bible. It keeps on giving. Regular reading will prove this: the Bible is the one book that keeps on giving. Any student of scripture will tell you how often you read the verses you’ve read before but it comes alive to you in a way that it didn’t before. It keeps on giving. That’s another reason why I keep on reading it year after year.

Now is the time to renew commitment to reading God’s Word daily. I renew my commitment every year to have a daily dose of scripture. Sometimes I skip it and I regret it. But I get up the next day and start over. I don’t quit.

Even if you miss a day, don’t quit. What if you fail on a promise to kiss your wife everyday? Just because you miss a day, you don’t say, “Well, I failed to remember to kiss my wife today. So I quit.” No, you renew your commitment the next day! Simple illustration but it works!

Phillips, Craig & Dean’s Randy Phillips Raises $15,000 to Support Armed Forces with Texas Ranger’s Hit, “The Claw”

Randy Phillips of Phillips, Craig & Dean recently donated $15,000 from his Texas Ranger’s fan favorite tune, “The Claw,” to Col. Dave Jones of Ft. Hood’s Phantom Trackers unit. The full proceeds from the song will go to support the families of the 400 piece squadron while they are serving in the most dangerous parts of Afghanistan for a year, and ensure that their families experience memorable times during their deployment such as celebrating Christmas, birthdays and anniversaries.

“The Claw,” written by Phillips and gospel rap artist Canton Jones, grew to fame amongst the Dallas and Fort Worth area during the Texas Rangers baseball season. Outfielder Josh Hamilton also got behind the tune as well as local television and radio stations in the area as the Rangers made their way into the World Series. Radio stations such as KLTY had Phillips on the air every week to give updates on the total amount raised, and local ESPN networks, the CBS affiliate and more also had Phillips on for interviews to promote the song.

When launching the sale of the song on www.dotheclaw.com, Phillips always had the intention of donating the raised funds to the military, specifically the Ft. Hood army base in his home state of Texas. “I wanted to do something noble with the funds if God chose to bless this quirky song,” explains Phillips. “Those serving at Ft. Hood and their families have such a huge place in my heart.”  Phillips also wrote “Wishing On A Christmas Star” for the holiday season with proceeds from the song benefitting the USO Wounded Warrior Program. The song is written from the perspective of military personnel being deployed during Christmas, and missing loved ones. For more information and to hear the song, visit www.operationstar1.com.

“After singing for almost 20 years, to be honored with our first career Dove win for an album, specifically for ‘Fearless,’ is such an honor. We are humbled by this accolade and the continuation of our ministry as well as the success of ‘Revelation Song.’ Thank you to the Gospel Music Association and to Jennie Lee Riddle for writing such a great song.”
