Emmanuel “God With Us” – MercyMe Reminds Us Of The Reason For The Season

“All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him “Emmanuel” which means “God With Us.” Matthew 1:22-23

MercyMe’s song “God With Us” may not have been intended just for Christmas, but it serves as a great worship anthem for setting our hearts and minds on our amazing God and the reason for all of our celebrations. See what frontman Bart Millard had to say about it below, and check out the music video as you prepare for the season.

The whole idea that this big god ever looked our way is pretty mind boggling. Scripture says, “Who is man that you are mindful of us?” and it’s just an amazing thought that God would ever pay attention to us at all. This song is trying to relay that feeling when you find yourself in the presence of God and it’s so intense that you’re about to bust at the seems. It’s a daunting task trying to use limited vocabulary to describe an infinite God, but this is one of those songs that we hope outlasts us. – Bart Millard, MercyMe

“GOD WITH US” by MercyMe

Who are we that You would be mindful of us?
What do You see that’s worth looking our way?

We are free in ways that we never should be
Sweet release from the grip of these chains

Like hinges straining from the weight
My heart no longer can keep from singing

Chorus
All that is within me cries
For You alone be glorified
Emmanuel
God with us

My heart sings a brand new song
The debt is paid these chains are gone
Emmanuel
God with us

Lord You know our hearts don’t deserve Your glory
Still You show a love we cannot afford

Like hinges straining from the weight
My heart no longer can keep from singing

Chorus

Such a tiny offering compared to Calvary
Nevertheless we lay it at Your feet
(Repeat)

Chorus
