David and Philip Zach started recording The North Star, Remedy Drive’s eighth full-length album, on top of hotels in the red light districts of Southeast Asia. “During the day we’d write and record and at night we’d do investigations and casework with The Exodus Road,” David explains of his unique partnership with the charity committed to rescuing underage girls from sex trafficking.
Remedy Drive’s founder and frontman, David has been working undercover with The Exodus Road for five years. His affiliation with the charity has led to a dynamic shift in his career as a musician, inspiring albums of advocacy for the enslaved and exiled, including 2014’s Commodity and 2016’s Hope’s Not Giving Up. To date, Remedy Drive’s fans have contributed nearly $350,000 to The Exodus Road and have helped connect four new volunteers with the organization. With The North Star, David wanted to tell this story more emotionally than he ever had before, incorporating the plight of refugees and slaves while singing an anthem for freedom fighters around the world. “We wanted to capture the feeling of that humidity,” David said of producing some of the album while traveling around Southeast Asia. “We wanted to capture the narrative of the oppression and to be able to get that story into the melodies themselves.”
“I wrote these songs of hope, freedom and refuge against a backdrop of war, slavery and exile,” David explains, considering the context of his nine trips abroad with The Exodus Road. “So the hope on The North Star is a bit more guarded and less simplistic than in the past. It’s a more informed and more desperate form of hope.” Remedy Drive’s most personal and soul-searching offering to date, The North Star is, above all else, an invitation. Can we join the fight? Will we help rescue the oppressed and sing the abolitionist’s anthem? The time is now.
