This week’s featured song story comes to us from Meredith Andrews. We’re excited to share with you the story behind her song “Spirit Of The Living God,” a song that is an atmosphere changing song.
“I remember the 1st time I ever sang this song, it was at a staff meeting at our church and before I could even get to the chorus, that first verse sang ‘Spirit of the living God, we only want to hear your voice, we’re hanging on to every word.’ It was like as soon as those words left, the whole room changed. It was like this invitation of going, ‘yes God, yes Holy Spirit come. And do what only You can do.’ I believe that is an invitation that God always answers. It’s an invitation he always accepts. Holy spirit come and have your way. It’s the oldest prayer in the book, it’s the oldest prayer in the church. That God we need you to come and move and shift our perspective and open up our eyes to see what we can’t see, open up our eyes to see Jesus in a way we haven’t seen him before. Reveal to us the heart of the father. May our perspective be changed in your presence. That’s such an amazing prayer to pray and something that I believe God really wants to do in us.” – Meredith Andrews

I love that we sing this in worship, but I must admit, when people come up and ask about the words, “when you fall…” and then follow up with, “when does He fall?” Or something to the statement of “God does not fall, why don’t we change the lyric to read when we fall, we fall at your feet? I am stumped…please help me to understand.

Same question here!!! I’m interpreting into sign language so I need the meaning. My husband just suggested the idea: when “He became flesh “. (Fall still doesn’t seem quite right for that meaning either)
Today we sang this song at a church we were visiting. I had heard the song before, but didn’t know all the words. When I saw the words on the big screen this morning, I was shocked to see the lines about the Spirit falling. I don’t understand that. I see that two other people wrote about this, and I don’t see an answer. I am perplexed. Kind of rattled, to be honest.
I believe it is a similar phrase from the hymn with the same name, in the line that says “Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me”
Kind of like asking the Spirit to come down and speak to us and or through us!
